In a small inn in a small town, a strange man covered in bandages requests a room and demands privacy. He is conducting some experiments. When he begins to have trouble paying the room and board, the landlady demands full payment. In a fit of rage, the man reveals he is invisible and escapes the village. A villager finds the invisible man (revealed by his smoking a pipe) and corners him. The invisible stranger fights back and kills him.
The invisible man is a scientist named Griffin. He left his notes in the village, and so coerces a transient to help him get them back. The transient betrays Griffin. Once again, Griffin loses his temper and attacks, but in the struggle, he himself is shot.] Griffin takes refuge with an old colleague, Dr. Kemp, to whom he reveals himself and the origins of his time as the invisible man. He then confides to Kemp that he no longer wants to return to normalcy but to terrorize the country.
Kemp alerts the authorities and attempts to set a trap for Griffin, using himself as bait, but Griffin intercepts the message and shoots the officer protecting Kemp. Kemp runs to the village where the villagers come to his aid, beating the invisible man to death.
